Rooted in Heritage: The Palmyra Palm and Universiti Malaya’s Commitment to Sustainability
The cover page of this Universiti Malaya Sustainability Report 2023 features an image of the Palmyra palm (Borassus flabellifer), a tree of deep cultural and historical significance in Malaysia. Its leaves, once used as writing material for ancient manuscripts before the advent of paper, were prized for their durability, playing a key role in preserving early Malay literary works and historical records. The Palmyra palm also holds a prominent place in the University's identity, as it is featured in the Universiti Malaya Coat of Arms, symbolizing resilience and heritage. Additionally, the Palmyra palm can be found in the University's Rimba Ilmu Botanic Garden, further emphasizing its importance within the campus.
