UM contributes to the Selangor River Fireflies Conservation Management Studies Workshop with Stakeholders
On April 11, 2023, Lembaga Urus Air Selangor (LUAS) hosted a strategic workshop with stakeholders on Selangor River Fireflies Conservation Management at the Malaysia Genome and Vaccine Institute, Kajang Selangor with Forest Research Institute Malaysia (FRIM) as the appointed consultants. Members of the workshop include Kuala Selangor and other state representatives of local authorities and agencies, universities, and NGOs.
Two aims of the workshop are to brief participants on the current status of the following:
i) Firefly population monitoring studies at Selangor River, Kuala Selangor, and Fireflies Genetics Studies
ii) Genetic Rescue Plan for the Selangor River Fireflies
These two studies are part of the strategies and components in Policy 4: Fireflies Conservation and Ecosystem of Selangor River Integrated Watershed Management Plan (2022-2030).
The workshop serves as a platform to collect input and feedback from stakeholders before preparing the report's final draft in April 2023.
Ts. Hj. Hasrolnizam Shaari S.I.S, A.M.S, LUAS Director, officiated the workshop, followed by two progress updates by Forest Research Institute Malaysia (FRIM). UM is represented by members of the Institute of Biological Sciences, Faculty of Science (Prof. Dr. Subha Bhassu), Water Warriors UM, and Inspirasi Kawa Enterprise of Sungai Selangor Citizen Science Centre (Mr. Affan Nasaruddin).
