The cover of the Universiti Malaya Sustainability Report 2024 features a batik design as a visual gateway to the report’s deeper narrative—one that is grounded in classical Malay peribahasa. While the batik symbolises our national identity and cultural heritage, the heart of this report lies in the integration of peribahasa to frame all 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). These timeless proverbs encapsulate values of wisdom, balance, collective responsibility, and respect for the environment. By interpreting the SDGs through peribahasa, UM localises global aspirations into principles that are familiar, meaningful, and rooted in the moral fabric of our community. The batik on the cover therefore serves as a cultural prelude—an introduction that reflects the spirit of tradition—while the true narrative unfolds through the peribahasa that guide and deepen our sustainability commitment.
