[Invitation by Registration] National Peace Conference: Southeast Asia - Conflict Without Borders 2023

Mar 14, 2023
09.00 AM - 05.00 PM
Auditorium, Asia-Europe Institute, Universiti Malaya

Dear Campus Community,

It is with great pleasure that we invite you to attend the above-mentioned inaugural National Peace Conference: Southeast Asia - Conflict Without Borders supported by the Sasakawa Peace Foundation and British High Commission Kuala Lumpur. This conference is a collaboration between IMAN Research, Universiti Malaya (Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences and Asia-Europe Institute) and Muslim Youth Movement of Malaysia (ABIM).

Looking at the current state of global and regional affairs today, we believe that this conference is indeed timely. Southeast Asia is sandwiched between the US and China rivalry and experiencing the global effects of the Russian-Ukraine war, but it has also become a much more attractive destination for investors. It is a dynamic region of half a billion people which still has a significant youth dividend, and the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) regional integration blueprint is an on-going process which has made some substantive achievements especially in facilitating trade.

However, unfortunately, the region is still home to several unresolved conflicts and disputes in multiple countries; the Myanmar 2021 military coup is bringing the country to the verge of an all-out civil war on top of its existing conflicts, the on-going Southern Thailand conflict which is the longest running conflict in the region and parts of Southern Philippine which continue to be an issue. This does not include the unsettled territorial and maritime claims between countries that have also led to violent skirmishes, not to mention the US-China rivalry in the South China sea. These conflicts unfortunately have a spill over effect towards neighbouring countries within the region, and Malaysia is one of them.

Hence, the discourse of peace and regional peace to be more specific is pertinent. This conference is hoped to contribute to the national discourse on regional conflicts affecting Malaysia and the way forward beyond the angle of hard security.
