'WASTE & RIVER' VOLUNTEERISM PROGRAM AND
ANAK AIR BATU RIVER CLEAN-UP HOSTED BY WATER WARRIORS
21 May (Monday)  & 28 May 2022 (Saturday) @ UM Campus

Human activities have been affecting rivers and other natural systems for millennia. Urban rivers are parts of larger water catchment ecosystems, forming parts of wider nested, interconnected systems. The urban river syndrome and the rampant deterioration of urban river ecology are concerning issues to be addressed by everyone from all walks of life.

Water Warriors UM is spearheading the long-term campaign of educating the public, especially the UM Community (staff and students), on the importance of rivers and why we should protect and conserve them. For example, a strategic partnership with various parties in UM through academic courses such as the volunteerism program has been one of the practical and sought-after courses among students to experience hands-on activities (river clean-up and recycling).

On 28th May 2022, a group of UM volunteers joined the UM post-flash flood (incident on 24th April) clean-up along the rivers in UM with a collection of 8 kilograms of waste of all sorts.

On 21st May 2022, a team of UM students enrolled in the Volunteerism course assisted the Anak Air Batu River Clean up and within the Faculty of Science UM & UM Main Library area with 7 kilograms of waste collected.

We want to take this opportunity to advise everyone to dispose of their waste responsibly, into the designated bins and recycling bins provided around campus. Please do not litter. Together, we can make our campus cleaner, safer, and sustainable. Those litters would most definitely clog out our rivers, triggering flash flood risks due to heavy rain.
