UM Zero Waste Campaign spearheads
UM Circular Economy initiative with Participatory Briefing on Campus Cafeteria Food Waste Separation Program -
an effort to enhance enculturation of campus sustainability practices

In an effort to enhance enculturation of campus sustainability practices on waste management, the UM Zero Waste Campaign (UM ZWC) took the lead representing UM Circular Economy teams, in organizing a comprehensive participatory briefing session aimed at implementing a Food Waste Separation Program within the campus cafeterias of Universiti Malaya (UM).

The initiative, designed to mitigate environmental impact and promote responsible and integrated waste management, gathered stakeholders from various departments and student bodies to discuss the implementation strategies and operational guidelines of the program.

During the session, key aspects such as waste sorting techniques, designated strategic collection points, and educational outreach initiatives were elaborated upon. Participants engaged in productive discussions, sharing insights and best practices to ensure the sustainability of the program's success in the long run. The session was delivered by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Noor Zalina Mahmood (Project Leader of UM Circular Economy Living Lab - LL2022CE001 - The Relevance of a Sustainable Food Waste Separation at Source System at UM Cafeteria for a Circular Economy Initiative in Campus) and moderated by Mrs. Mairuz Asmarafariza Azlan (UM ZWC Key Person).

Spearheaded by the UM ZWC, the participatory briefing session underscored UM's commitment to fostering a culture of sustainability and environmental stewardship co-created with UM communities and stakeholders. It served as a crucial step towards aligning campus practices with global sustainability goals and promoting a greener, more eco-conscious community within Universiti Malaya.
