UM Vice-Chancellor's New Year Address 2023 Covers UM Smart Campus and UM Carbon Neutral Campus Initiatives

Annually, the campus community gathers at the Tunku Canselor Hall for the new year address by the Vice-Chancellor (VC) of Universiti Malaya. The focus of the 2023 message delivered by Profesor Dato' Ir. Dr. Mohd Hamdi Abd. Shukor, UM's VC, covered various topics related to the university's progress and plans. 

In 2022, UM community again demonstrated excellent performance in alignment with UM's vision to be a  global university impacting the world. VC emphasized the need for all staff to comprehend the roadmap to accomplishing UM's vision and mission. The following three major plans encompass a concise overview and progress update on initiatives carried out by the campus community: 

i) UM Strategic Plan 2021-2025
ii) UM Transformation Plan 2021-2030 (Reference 1, 2)
iii) UM Health Project 2021-2025

Two of the key initiatives under UM Transformation Plan 2021 - 2030 highlighted in the Address contribute towards a sustainable campus is encapsulated in UM Master Plan 2050 - Campus Planning Blueprint, which covers the following two initiatives:

UM Smart Campus Initiatives:
i. Smart, Sustainable and Efficient Infrastructure
ii. Safety and Security
iii. Holistic System
iv. Advanced Research Computing
v. Digital Governance
vi. Smart Utilities Management

UM Carbon Neutral Campus Initiatives
i. Sustainability Policy
ii. Green Electricity Tariff (GET) TNB
iii. Recycling 3R on Wheels
iv. Water Conservation Program
v. Municipal Waste Reduction
vi. Comfortable & Safe Pedestrian Networks
vii. Tree Planting Program
viii. Solar Photovoltaic (PV) Projects
xi. Physical Remote Learning Facilities 
x. Electricity Supply System Upgrading

Among other notable highlights include the student empowerment, UM new quality management system (in replacement of SIRIM MS ISO 9001:2015 certification by 2024), new corporate identity, UM Special Projects on high impact cross and mutidisciplinary research, and the recently endorsed proposal on the establishment of new UM Centres of Excellence (CoEs - among them including climate preparedness and community resilience, Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG), food security and intelligent farming).

 

The VC urged all Portfolio Heads, Deputy Vice-Chancellors, Deans, Directors, Heads of Centres, and Departments to continue engaging with staff and develop effective action plans that align with the university's vision and mission.
