UM Knowledge Sharing Visit
on the Management of Non-Revenue Water (NRW) in Selangor, Kuala Lumpur & Putrajaya
Hosted by Pengurusan Air Selangor Sdn. Bhd.
Visit by UM Sustainability and Development Centre (UMSDC) via Water Warriors
& Department of Development and Estate Maintenance (JPPHB)
11 August 2022 (Thursday) 10 am - 12 pm @ Air Selangor Office
Non-revenue water (NRW) is clean water that has been produced and is 'lost' somewhere in the water distribution system before it reaches the customer - never reaching its final destination.
From an environmental sustainability perspective, reducing NRW is essential. Some areas in Malaysia are already facing water scarcity. However, reducing actual NRW losses, such as physical leakages, usually requires significant capital investments.
Ministry of Environment and Water (KASA) in February 2022 (reported by New Straits Times) states that the NRW rate nationwide can be reduced by 35 percent under the 12th Malaysia Plan (12MP), with Perlis and Pahang among those with the highest rate of NRW.
Universiti Malaya team of 12 comprises UMSDC's Water Warriors researchers joined by the Department of Development and Estate Maintenance (JPPHB)'s engineers and staff, paid a sustainability visit on 11th August to Air Selangor to learn more about the management of NRW in Selangor, Kuala Lumpur, and Putrajaya.
Air Selangor is committed to reducing the NRW rate as part of its long-term commitment via allocating the expenditure budget to the Old Pipe Replacement Programme and replacing old and damaged water meters. Air Selangor's commitment is further supported by its strategic planning and internal initiatives, including formulating the Key Performance Indicator (KPI) to address these challenges (Source: Press Release of Air Selangor - 3rd February 2021).
Special thanks to Air Selangor for the generosity in receiving our visit.
