UM Kickoff No Single-Use Plastics Initiative by Empowering Campus Community
with Glass Bottle Campaign towards a Greener and Responsible Meetings and Events
In a proactive move towards promoting sustainability and eco-consciousness, Universiti Malaya Sustainable Development Centre (UMSDC) under the portfolio of Associate Vice-Chancellor (Corporate Strategy) spearheads an Enculturation of Green Event and Sustainable Practices. As part of its ongoing efforts by phases to combat plastic waste and promote reusable alternatives, UMSDC distributed glass bottles to various PTjs in hosting a greener and responsible meetings and events. This strategic initiative is part of the intervention in supporting the implementation of Universiti Malaya Action Plan on Single-Use Plastics and Disposable Items Reduction (1st Edition, 2022) and UM Green Events Guideline: A Guide to Running Green Meetings and Events (2023).
As of March 2024, a total of 12 Offices and Centres has been engaged:
Vice-Chancellor Office, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research & Innovation) Office, Associate Vice-Chancellor (Corporate Strategy) Office, UM Community Engagement Centre (UMCares), Corporate Rankings Centre (CRC), Corporate Performances Centre (CPC), Rimba Ilmu Botanic Garden, Makerspace@UM, UM Centre for Civilisational Dialogue (UMCCD), Department of Science and Technology Studies – Faculty of Science, Department of Development and Estate Maintenance (JHB), and Centre for Foundation Studies in Science (PASUM).
This initiative not only seeks to minimize our carbon footprint but also cultivates a sense of responsibility towards environmental conservation among campus community: management, staff, students, and stakeholders, through our day-to-day basis in hosting meetings and events. By switching to glass bottles instead of single-use plastic containers, UM through UMSDC aspires to walk the talk and pledge a renewed commitment toward sustainable practices by setting a commendable example for others to emulate.
