UM Contributes to Participatory Engagement for Strategic Framework
on the Implementation of Patients' Medicine Disposal Initiative
towards Environmental Sustainability (MediSafE Initiative) by Ministry of Health Malaysia
An engaging session focused on the implementation of the MediSafe Initiative, aimed at environmentally sustainable disposal of medicines stored by patients, was recently conducted under the coordination of Pharmaceutical Services Division, Ministry of Health Malaysia. This session sought to foster dialogue and collaboration among multi-stakeholders to ensure the effective execution of this initiative.
Participants from various sectors, including healthcare professionals, environmental experts, policymakers (from various agencies and departments under the Ministry of Health - MOH, Ministry of Finance - MOF, Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability - NRES, Ministry of Higher Education - MOHE via UM - UiTM - UPM - UKM, Ministry of Housing and Local Government - KPKT), university hospitals (PPUM, HUMS, PPSAS - IIUM, HUSM), private hospitals, and pharmacies community representatives, came together to explore strategies and best practices for the safe disposal of unused or expired medications. Through interactive discussions and knowledge-sharing sessions, attendees delved into the challenges and opportunities associated with the MediSafe Initiative.
The two days session emphasized the current progress on MediSafE initiative, and its importance to prevent environmental harm. It also underscored the need for robust infrastructure and support systems to facilitate the collection and disposal of unused medicines in an eco-friendly manner, which include the aspect of continuous educational and awareness program for the users. Universiti Malaya Sustainable Development Centre (UMSDC) Director was represented by Dr. Fathiah Mohamed Zuki - UM Living Lab Fellow from Faculty of Engineering UM, under the extended invitation of UM Living Lab Safe Disposal of Unused Medicines (Safe D.U.M.P) jointly spearheaded by Faculty of Pharmacy and Faculty of Medicine UM. Also present, Professor Dr. Debra Sim Si Mui - Faculty of Medicine UM, former project leader and founder of Safe D.U.M.P. initiative.
