We face multifaceted issues and challenges of unsustainability in this Age of the Anthropocene; humans are changing the planet in irreversible ways, knowingly or unknowingly. 

Today is indeed a critical moment for humanity to choose its future. The interdependency and fragility of today's world require us to collectively move forward and sustain human civilization. UM Centre for Civilisational Dialogue (UMCCD) spearheads the initiative in providing a platform for sharing possible solutions in addressing issues currently hinging upon humankind.

A two days International Conference on Civilizational Dialogue 2022 with the theme 'The Future of Civilization: Reimagining Sustainability' hosted via Zoom, among others, aims to foster integration and platform of great minds to meet and discourse on a vital topic that concerns the current and future generations while establishing networks towards a sustainable civilization of the future.  

This Conference was deliberated by a lineup of eminent scholars on topics such as Climate Justice, Science and Religion, Sustainable Development, Social Justice, and many more.

Emeritus Professor Datuk Dr. Osman Bakar (ISTAC-IIUM)
'Social Justice and Widening Gaps between the Rich and Poor'

Prof. Dr. Anantha Duraiappah (UNESCO - Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Education for Peace and Sustainable Development / MGIEP, India) 
'Being Human in the Age of Artificial Intelligence'

Prof. Dr. Ibrahim Mohammed Zain (Hamad bin Khalifa University, Qatar)
'Investigation of Calendars: Worldviews and Religions'

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ellisha Nasruddin (Universiti Sains Malaysia)
'Civilization and Dialogue of Civilizations (DoC): Anticipation and Transformative Futures'

Dr. Sharina Abdul Halim (Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia - LESTARI)
'Sustainable Development and Local Actions'

The Conference concluded with Closing Remarks by Prof. Datuk Dr. Azizan Baharuddin (Director of UMCCD), moderated by  Assoc. Prof. Dr. Durriyyah Sharifah Hj Hasan Adli (Research Fellow UMCCD).  

Key messages:

  1. To address problems or challenges, always seek the root cause.

  2. Empathic listening is a critical skill in understanding the real needs of a society truly. 

  3.  Environmental conservation must be harmonious with cultural heritage preservation and local community empowerment.

  4. Do not forget to be HUMAN, KIND, and treat others and other living beings RESPECTFULLY. 

UMCCD hosted this Conference in partnership with UKM-Yayasan Sime Darby Chair on Sustainability, UM UNESCO Club, and UM Sustainability and Development Centre (UMSDC).
