myIMPACT stands for “Intervarsity Malaysia Public Policy Advocacy Competition” – a national-level competition that aims to stimulate young minds in Malaysia to formulate and propose credible policy recommendations related to environmental protection and climate action aligned to the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Throughout the process, the competition aspired to raise awareness of the importance of public policy in shaping the country’s future and promote collaboration between relevant stakeholders.
A team of four promising young students from the Department of Science and Technology Studies, Faculty of Science UM, succeeded in pitching their project on 'Smart-Mobility: Digital Solutions for an Interconnected Malaysia' by the panel of judges. Besides completing the training and workshop provided by YouthCare Malaysia, the shortlisted top 5 semi-finalists were also tasked to promote their proposal to get the buy-in and support from the public.
The judges of the final stage consisted of Tan Sri Jemilah Mahmood (Executive director of Sunway Centre for Planetary Health), Dato Yasmin Mohamad (Managing Partner at FutureReady Consulting & Pro-chancellor of Herriot-Watt University), Mr. Ahmad Farid ( Deputy Undersecretary of Climate Change Division from Ministry of Environment and Water (KASA), Mr Quek Yew Aun (Administrative & Diplomatic Officer at the Ministry of Energy & Natural Resources), IR Zulaikha Mokhtar (Senior Assistant Director of Industrial Compliance Section, Enforcement Division, DOE Putrajaya) and Moviin Damodaran (Project Director of myIMPACT).
The winning team also had bigger opportunities to discuss and develop their policy with relevant stakeholders. We thank the UM community for their endless support, especially for the voting session. UMSDC supports the participation fees for this year's competition as part of the capacity-building intervention for UM students. Congratulations once again! Job well done to the team and mentors!
