Exploring the Global Pulse: Discussion on Planetary Health

In a bid to shed light on the critical intersection of human health and environmental sustainability, Universiti Malaya Sustainable Development Centre (UMSDC) recently hosted an exploratory discussion on planetary health featuring Universiti Malaya-Sunway University-Monash University's Fulbright Scholar, Matthew Carvalho. The discussion session convened respective members of Universiti Malaya Living Lab Fellows and Universiti Malaya Centre for Civilisational Dialogue (UMCCD) to delve into the multifaceted dimensions of planetary health, its connection within Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) spheres, and its implications for our world.
Drawing from his wealth of experience as a scholar affiliated with the Universiti Malaya, Monash University, and Sunway University, Matthew Carvalho captivated the participants with his insights. Carvalho's discussion underscored the urgent need for collective action to address pressing environmental challenges and safeguard human well-being. He views Planetary Health as the conduit to bridge different spheres of health and environmental movements to be well-accepted by society at large, by focusing on the endgame of benefitting the health of the planet and wellbeing of humanity. He also highlighted that Planetary Health as a lense to combat issues of misconception on climate change by focusing on values to connect the dots, bridging people together through bridges.
This discussion was actively participated by members of UMSDC (Assoc. Prof. Dr. Zeeda Fatimah Mohamad - Director, Mr. Mohd Fadhli Rahmat Fakri, Dr. Azizi Abu Bakar & Ms. Nuratikah Mohd Zainodin), UM Living Lab Fellows (Dr. Sarah Abdul Razak - Faculty of Science, Dr. Fung Hon Ngen - Faculty of Science, Dr. Nor Malina Manan - Faculty of Dentistry, & Dr. Shahid Bashir - HICoE UMPEDAC) and UM Centre for Civilisational Dialogue (Assoc. Prof. Dr. Durriyyah Sharifah Hj. Hasan Adli - Research Fellow). All members recognized the growing recognition of planetary health as a vital area of study and advocacy. With person like Matthew Carvalho committed in advocating planetary health, offering hope for a brighter and more sustainable future for all. All members looking forward to more updates in the area of planetary health. In Universiti Malaya, Institute for Advanced Studies (IAS) is spearheading the advocacy of Planetary Health, with the official pledge in 2022 through a recognition as an official member of Planetary Health Alliance in 2021.
