The Planet Prodigy (TPP), through the Universiti Malaya Sustainable Development Centre (UMSDC) and RCE Central Semenanjung, recently conducted the first series of the Kuala Lumpur Urban Green-Blue Spaces School Engagement Program (KL UGBS SEP) at SMK Maxwell, Kuala Lumpur, on 16th July 2026. Supported by the Yinson4Youth (Y4Y) 2026 grant, the programme aims to empower school students and educational institutions in Kuala Lumpur by strengthening environmental stewardship, place-based learning, and youth participation in urban sustainability initiatives.
The school outreach programme introduced lower Form 6 students to the importance of urban green-blue spaces, such as rivers, lakes, parks, and forests, through a series of interactive and reflective activities. Participants took part in the ‘Sense of Place’ module, where they reflected on meaningful natural spaces within their communities, as well as place-mapping and photovoice activities that encouraged them to document and share their perspectives on the relationship between people and the environment. Students also explored how urban ecosystems contribute to the well-being of communities and discussed ways in which young people can contribute to environmental conservation and sustainable urban development.
Feedback from participants highlighted the programme’s positive impact. A majority of students agreed that they had gained a better understanding of environmental stewardship, citizen science, and the role of individual actions in protecting local ecosystems. Survey responses also indicated stronger appreciation for Kuala Lumpur’s urban green-blue spaces and increased confidence in participating in future environmental initiatives. More importantly, many participants reported that the programme had helped them develop leadership, teamwork, and communication skills, while fostering a deeper sense of connection with their local environment. Several students also expressed greater motivation to adopt sustainable lifestyles and to become involved in future environmental stewardship activities.
Through initiatives such as KL UGBS SEP, TPP, UMSDC, and RCE Central Semenanjung continues to demonstrate the value of partnerships in nurturing environmentally conscious and empowered youth who are committed to building a more sustainable Kuala Lumpur.
