The experts projected that in 2022, the amount of Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) collected would be 14 million metric tonnes annually, enough to fill the Petronas Twin Towers every seven days. The Solid Waste Corporation (SWCorp) reported that the recycling rate achieved in 2020 is 30.67 percent, lower than other developed countries such as Singapore (59 percent), South Korea (49 percent), and Taiwan (60 percent). The recycling rate target for Malaysia set by the National Green Agenda is 40 percent by 2025.
Universiti Malaya via UM Sustainability and Development Centre (UM SDC) and its pioneer EcoCampus Living Lab UM Zero Waste Campaign (UM ZWC) partner up with the MRA Siswa, a student-led wing of the Malaysian Relief Agency that seeks to lift the spirit of service among Malaysian students. This pilot collaborative sustainability campaign called EcoFund aims to promote the importance of recycling while at the same time contributing to the mangrove trees planting in Kuala Selangor.
A total of 155.5 kilograms of recyclables (Black and white papers - 41 kg, mixed papers - 100 kg, carton boxes - 9.5 kg, and plastic bottles - 5 kg) were collected. These collective donations managed to sponsor two mangrove trees from this pilot program! A total of 341 kg-CO -eq managed to be diverted, equivalent to the amount of carbon sequestered by 5.6 tree seedlings grown for ten years.
Special thanks to all our Earth Warriors for their recyclable donations! Kudos to MRA Siswa team!
