HEARTIEST CONGRATULATIONS TO UNIVERSITI MALAYA!
SUSTAINABILITY@UM TEAM
(UM ZERO WASTE CAMPAIGN - UMZWC & THE DEPARTMENT OF DEVELOPMENT AND ESTATE MAINTENANCE - JPPHB)

BAGS THE WASTE MANAGEMENT STAR RATING AWARD
IN THE COMMERCIAL, INDUSTRIAL, AND INSTITUTIONAL (STAR-CII) 2023 -
BEST PRACTICES IN ENERGY CONSERVATION CATEGORY BY SWCORP

Heartfelt congratulations to Universiti Malaya for achieving a remarkable milestone! We are delighted to share the joyous news that Universiti Malaya has clinched the prestigious Waste Management Star Rating Award in the Commercial, Industrial, and Institutional (STAR-CII) 2023 for the Best Practices in Energy Conservation category, presented by the
Solid Waste Management and Public Cleansing Corporation (SWCorp) Malaysia.

This esteemed accolade is a testament to Universiti Malaya's unwavering dedication and years of hard work, particularly through the pioneering
UM Zero Waste Campaign (UMZWC) living lab project, generously supported by the Department of Development and Estate Maintenance (JPPHB). Together, they exemplify the university's commitment, leadership, and support, guided by the vision of UM Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research & Innovation) and Associate Vice-Chancellor (Infrastructure and Information Technology). The UM Sustainability and Development Centre (UMSDC), serving as the campus sustainability enabler, has now reimagined the waste management initiative under the UM Circular Economy Living Lab – a dynamic step towards creating a more integrated, inclusive, and low carbon campus waste management system.

Universiti Malaya's outstanding achievement in bagging the Energy Conservation Category recognizes its inclusive waste management approach and pioneering initiatives, including
anaerobic digestion, monthly recycling buy-back programs, and organic composting (food and garden waste via Takakura composting method) led by UMZWC and JPPHB. As we forge ahead on our journey towards circular economy initiatives, Universiti Malaya envisions the establishment of Integrated Waste Management Facilities and warmly invites your active participation and support in bringing this vision to life.

This prestigious award not only celebrates Universiti Malaya's success but also serves as a beacon to encourage best practices in solid waste management across Malaysia's commercial, industrial, and institutional sectors (CII). By doing so, we contribute to the National Solid Waste Management Policy, the National Cleanliness Policy, and the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 12 on Responsible Consumption and Production.

On behalf of Universiti Malaya, heartfelt congratulations extend to all the winners who are at the forefront of championing sustainable waste management in Malaysia. For more information on SWCorp, please visit the link provided
