Women are more vulnerable to environmental degradation and climate change and have different perspectives, concerns, and ideas for change. In conjunction with the International Women's Day in March, The Embassy of Sweden partnered up with WikiMedia Malaysia and Universiti Malaya in co-organizing a one-day workshop called WikiGap focusing on SDG4 (Quality Education) and SDG5 (Gender Equality).
Universiti Malaya via the Institution of Mechanical Engineers UM Student Chapter (IMechE), in close partnership with WikiMedia Malaysia, took up the coordinator role for the workshop to promote the role of women in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). The Swedish Ambassador to Malaysia, Dr. Joachim Bergström, graced the occasion with a welcoming speech, while Assoc. Prof. Dr. Zeeda Fatimah Mohamad (Director, UM Sustainability and Development Centre) complemented the event with a keynote speech highlighting the role and contribution of UM's women in the sustainability field.
The workshop provides participants (in hybrid mode) with editathon sessions in a small group to get together and edit Wikipedia articles to promote women's role and contribution in STEM. One of the aspirations of this initiative is to educate the public with credible and accurate information published in Wikipedia; and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) is an exploratory subject to be worked on to promote SDG literacy. Special thanks to The Embassy of Sweden, IMechE UM Student Chapter, and WikiMedia Malaysia for the opportunity given to UM SDC to be part of this important gathering.
