"As Universiti Malaya, an institution of knowledge, we bear the responsibility of leading change. Remember that: leading change towards sustainable development in alignment with the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals. In this regard, Universiti Malaya's Net Zero Framework has been introduced, with key strategies to achieve carbon neutrality by the year 2030.
And I urge, I urge, and I urge our entire campus community to come together and embrace Universiti Malaya as a sustainable campus. It's entirely up to us—whether we want to make it happen or not. Entirely up to us. Collectively, let's adopt a greener lifestyle by minimizing energy and water wastage, recycling, and reducing single-use plastic."
— Prof. Dato' Seri Ir. Dr. Noor Azuan bin Abu Osman, during the Vice-Chancellor’s New Year Address 2025, on 20th February 2025.
Congratulations to everyone at Universiti Malaya for their active participation and commitment to food waste separation during the refreshment session following the Vice-Chancellor’s New Year Address 2025, held at Dewan Tunku on 20th February 2025. Sincere appreciation is also extended to the student volunteers from The Planet Prodigy (TPP) for their diligent efforts in monitoring the waste sorting stations and ensuring adherence to food waste separation practices.
We are delighted to share some notable achievements from the event:
✅ Four waste sorting stations were strategically set up at the venue.
✅ No single-use plastics were utilized during the event.
✅ 15.5 kg of food waste was successfully diverted from the landfill and delivered to the Zero Waste Campaign site for composting, creating a nutrient-rich material that enhances soil quality and minimizes waste.
A special acknowledgment goes to the Estates Department for providing shuttle bus services (round trip) to facilitate campus transportation while contributing to a reduction in our carbon footprint.
Together, we are making significant strides toward achieving carbon neutrality by 2030.
