Capacity Building Pilot Workshop on Transformational Sustainability Leadership Module
for National Planetary Health Action Plan (TSLM -NPHAP)

under the auspices of the Academy of Sciences Malaysia (ASM)
In a strategic commitment toward planetary health, the Universiti Malaya Centre for Civilisational Dialogue (UMCCD) under the leadership of Emeritus Professor Datuk Dr. Azizan Baharuddin (UMCCD Director), recently organized a pilot capacity building workshop to catalyze transformational sustainability leadership for the National Planetary Health Action Plan. This project is funded and supported by the Academy of Sciences Malaysia (ASM), in collaboration of respective UM Members as module writers, trainers and facilitators: UMCCD, UM Sustainable Development Centre (UMSDC), UM STEM Centre, Institute for Advanced Studies (IAS), and Department of Science and Technology Studies - Faculty of Science. This workshop is also jointly organized in partnership with Rimba Ilmu Botanic Garden and UM Zero Waste Campaign, as fieldwork partners.
From Feb 28th to Mar 1st, 2024, leaders from diverse sectors immersed themselves in the Workshop on Transformational Sustainability Leadership practically designed in 7 comprehensive modules with theory and practical components. This session aimed to equip participants with tools and insights to drive transformative change and exchanges, complemented with hands-on engagements. Starting with a discourse on Sustainability Leadership in the Context of the National Planetary Health Action Plan, attendees explored strategies for fostering innovation and collaboration from their diverse organisational context. Participants of this pilot workshop comprises members from Institut Masa Depan Malaysia (MASA), GRASS Malaysia, Yayasan Sime Darby, UKM-YSD Chair for Sustainability, Angkatan Belia Islam Malaysia (ABIM), Baháʼí Centre Malaysia, Institut Kefahaman Islam Malaysia (IKIM), & Sunway University - Sunway Centre for Planetary Health.
Through interactive sessions and field observations, participants gained a deeper understanding of planetary health complexities and honed practical skills. From policy formulation to community engagement, the workshop provided a platform for cultivating visionary leaders committed to shaping a sustainable future. As the event concluded, participants shared their actionable insights and recommendations, fueling momentum within the National Planetary Health Action Plan spearheaded by the Academy of Sciences Malaysia (ASM) and igniting a collective determination for progress toward a healthier planet.
