Universiti Malaya's Sustainability Training and Capacity Building Programs in 2025

In 2025, Universiti Malaya (UM) continued to support environmental and social sustainability through a range of training and capacity-building programmes primarily for staff, with some initiatives also involving students. These activities were mainly coordinated by the Universiti Malaya Sustainable Development Centre (UMSDC) and the Talent Excellence Centre (TEC) under the Registrar’s portfolio, in collaboration with faculties, research centres, and national as well as international partners.

Environmental Sustainability

UMSDC spearheaded 38 programs, engaging 2,127 individuals in diverse topics such as waste management, biodiversity conservation, planetary health, sustainable fashion, and ESG governance.

Complementing these efforts, TEC conducted 27 environmental-themed programs, training 889 staff members across areas such as lab safety, energy efficiency, green infrastructure, and chemical safety.

Social Sustainability

On the social front, UMSDC facilitated 3 programs with a focus on wellbeing, sustainable events and governance, reaching 130 participants.

Meanwhile, TEC organized a robust 141 program lineup targeting staff development in areas such as workplace ethics, leadership, health and well-being, financial literacy, and professional development. These initiatives trained 6,511 participants.

Conclusion

Through a strategic and inclusive approach, UM’s sustainability training programs in 2025 not only addressed key environmental and social challenges but also empowered its community to become active agents of sustainable transformation. The programs’ wide-ranging themes, high engagement levels, and integration across academic and operational domains demonstrate UM’s unwavering dedication to embedding sustainability deeply into its institutional culture.
