Universiti Malaya (UM) enforces strict policies to prevent bribery and corruption, aligning with national legislation. The Universiti Malaya's "Dasar Penerimaan dan Pemberian Hadiah" outlines that staff must not accept or give gifts related to their official duties, except under specific circumstances. Any gift that could be perceived as a bribe or that might compromise the integrity of the staff member's duties is strictly prohibited. Staff are required to seek approval from their head of department (HoD) when in doubt about the appropriateness of a gift.
The internal policy is reinforced by the adoption of the "Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission Act 2009 (Act 694)", which criminalizes the act of giving or receiving gratification to influence official duties. The Act empowers the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) to investigate and prosecute corruption cases, ensuring that public institutions like UM uphold transparency and accountability. By integrating these national legal standards into its governance, UM demonstrates a commitment to ethical conduct and the prevention of corrupt practices within its community.
