Pre-Asian Students Environment Platform (ASEP) 2022 -
UM Chapter hosted by UMCares and UM SDC:
Part 1 (sustainable water management & urban rivers) &
Part 2 (plastic upcycling workshop & green hospitality)
1 August 2022 (Monday) 9:30 am - 1 pm @ UM Varsity Lake, Pantai River-Side, & Rumah No. 2
The annual Asian Students Environment Platform (ASEP) gathers university students from Asian countries to discuss and make proposals on global environmental issues beyond national borders while learning about differences in each country's natural environment and values. AEON Environmental Foundation leads this initiative. At Universiti Malaya, UM Community Engagement Centre (UMCares) is the coordinating body for ASEP. Waseda University is the host university for 2022 with the theme: 'Satoyama Our Common Future.'
In 2022, UM has selected a group of 10 student delegates from different fields to represent UM and Malaysia in this annual environmental sustainability gathering. In realizing the aspiration of this year's theme on 'Satoyama' (an environment where people have co-existed with nature over time), UMCares joined hands with UM Sustainability and Development Centre (UM SDC) to host a one-day Pre-ASEP program. This program aims to give exposure and awareness to campus sustainability key initiatives.
The first slot was hosted by Mr. Affan Nasaruddin, Co-Founder of Water Warriors. This session brought the students to walk down the historical moments of ups and downs on the revival project of Varsity Lake. The students are also given hands-on activities on the river-side clean-up. A total of 4.1 kg of thrash of all sorts were collected, while 2.1 kg of recyclables managed to be sorted.
The second slot continued with a special tour at Rumah No. 2 on Kisah Plastik with a hands-on plastic upcycling workshop and a peek through at Airbnb UM Converted Bus.
