On 15 January 2026, BMW Group Malaysia and Universiti Malaya marked an important milestone by signing a Memorandum of Understanding under the Second-Life Use of EV Batteries for Rural & Community Electrification initiative. 
This strategic partnership focuses on advancing second-life applications for electric vehicle batteries and brings together BMW Group Malaysia with Universiti Malaya’s UM Power Energy Dedicated Advanced Centre (UMPEDAC), UM Community Engagement Centre (UMCares), and UM Sustainable Development Centre (UMSDC) to support research, pilot projects, and practical applications of repurposed EV batteries for community-based energy solutions in Malaysia.
