UM, in strategic partnership with JAWI, MGTC, and SWCorp,
launched Ramadan - Syawal Go Green 2023 programs at Masjid Zaid bin Haritsah, KL

As part of the UM's MoUs with the Federal Territories Islamic Religious Department (JAWI) on Green Mosque and with the Malaysian Green Technology and Climate Change Corporation (MGTC) on Rumah Ibadat Hijau (RIH - Green Houses of Worship), a strategic community program for Mosques in Zone 2 JAWI is launched in the month of Ramadan on April 1, 2023. A group of chairmen and imams from 8 mosques, 8 Friday mosques, and 64 surau within Zone 2 and the local community benefit from the program.

Masjid Zaid bin Haritsah located at Jalan Gombak, Kuala Lumpur, serves as the official venue host of the program. This program is hosted by UM Imarah Eco-Friends Club and UM Imarah Green Mosque Advocacy team in collaboration with JAWI, SWCorp Wilayah Persekutuan Kuala Lumpur, UM Sustainability and Development Centre (UMSDC), and UM Centre for Civilisational Dialogue (UMCCD)

The half-day program comprises the Ramadan-Syawal Go Green launch by YBhg. Ustaz Mohd Abd. Nasir Abdullah (JAWI Religious Administration Official of Zone 2), Special Address by YBhg. Datuk Prof. Dr. Azizan Baharuddin (UMCCD Director), Educational Booth by SWCorp WPKL, and Lestari Shop Corner (distribution of preloved attires for all guests) by Imarah Eco-Friends Club.

One of the notable highlights is the Environmental Sustainability Dialogue, with guest panelists: 1) Madam Ummi Kalthum Shuib (Director, SWCorp WPKL) and 2) Dr. Muhammad Alihanafiah Norasid (Senior Lecturer, al-Quran and al-Hadith Department, APIUM). This session is moderated by Dr. Asmawati Muhamad (Project Leader of Imarah Green Mosque Advocacy). The dialogue stresses the importance of systematic and sustainable waste management. It explains how it affects and relates to our daily activities and ibadah (religious practices).

This partnership supports the following:
1) the aspiration of the Pelan Pengimarahan Masjid-Masjid Wilayah Persekutuan 2020-2024, spearheaded by the Federal Territories Islamic Religious Department (JAWI),
2) MGTC programs on Rumah Ibadat Hijau/Green Houses of Worship (RIH).

UM extends our heartiest congratulations to Masjid Zaid bin Haritsah, especially Tuan Haji Aizul Adnan, Mosque Chairman, and its committee members on their recent achievements:
1) Diamond Recognition Certification for Low Carbon Cities Partner by YB Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad, Minister of Natural Resources, Environment and Climate Change (NRECC),
2) Rumah Ibadat Hijau (RIH) Recognition Plaque by YB Minister of Religious Affairs, and
3) Recipient of Waqaf Masjid Hijau from Yayasan Waqaf Malaysia.

This collaborative initiative is an urgent call to galvanize a collective effort, within the spirit of Malaysia Madani, from the grassroots community (religious community) to be on board in realizing the national aspiration to become a carbon-neutral nation by 2050.
